The rising focus on the importance of kitchens has prompted a kitchen design expert to name this coming year as "the year of kitchens".

Simon Penson, of kitchen design advice website My Next Kitchen, says that more and more people have discovered how important the room is.

Luxury kitchens in particular have seen an increase in popularity, after famous people have been showing off their kitchens in magazines and on interior design television programmes.

"It has been seen that the kitchen is indeed increasingly gaining on more attention. In fact over the last couple of years more and more celebrities have gone out in public displaying their kitchens in home interior magazines," he said.

"This has helped people catch on to the idea of creating stylish kitchens."

People looking to design a luxury new kitchen should contemplate installing a stone or slate flooring, according to UKTV's Home website, as the high-end material adds value to a house.
