How to combine contemporary and traditional kitchen design ★★★★★
Published on: 19/07/2010
Homeowners looking to mix traditional and contemporary kitchen design can do so in a number of ways.
This is according to Shazalynn Cavin-Winfrey, who has a degree from the Culinary Institute of America and tells the Washington Post that it is possible to combine industrial kitchen appliances with a more traditional look.
She achieved this in her own fitted kitchen by using open shelving supported by birch logs, adding a butcher block and stainless farm sink to her island unit and installing a pantry space for snacks that the family can grab on the go.
The cook also stores baking supplies directly on the worktop in oversize glass jars for a traditional look and feel.
Other ways of combining the look of traditional kitchens with that of more contemporary designs include installing a mosaic tile splashback, using blinds with a modern style and using handles with an antique appearance on kitchen units, according to Beverly Stuart-Vaughan of BBC show Real Rooms.
