Top tips for kitchen planning ★★★★★
Published on: 23/07/2010
There are various factors to consider when it comes to kitchen planning, but the most important ones include storage, lighting and colour.
This is according to Neera Gulati of the Deccan Herald, who suggests starting by checking the basic electrical, plumbing and structural layout of the property and noting the amount of natural light the kitchen receives.
She also recommends placing kitchen appliances according to how they are used - for example, sinks should be close to the fridge to make it easier to wash fruit and vegetables, while bins should be near cooking areas and microwaves should go next to the fridge.
For those looking to turn their new kitchen into a family-oriented space, a large multifunctional kitchen island unit or breakfast bar could be ideal.
"Don't ignore the shape of the kitchen room," Ms Gulati remarks.
"For smaller kitchens, use a single-line or the two way gallery layout. An L-shape will leave one corner of your kitchen free, while kitchen islands suit those with ample space."
In terms of kitchen lighting, it is worthwhile investing in more than one type of product, such as overhead and under-cabinet lights, the expert adds.
When choosing a colour, consider the current trend of "unexpected" flashes of brightness such as tiles or backsplashes against a largely monochrome design scheme, she advises.
It may also be worth bearing mind that colour specialist Pantone has named turquoise as the top shade for 2010.
