Kitchen design 'should be simple'

Published on: 27/07/2010Modern kitchenConsumers considering installing a new fitted kitchen should try to keep their kitchen planning as simple as possible.

This is according to TV show host Genevieve Gorder, who tells the Associated Press that homeowners tend to get bogged down in details such as soft fabrics and colour palettes when it comes to kitchen design.

She also recommends ensuring that once the kitchen is installed, its surfaces are kept as clear as possible at all times.

Fellow interior design experts Betsy Burnham and Brian Patrick Flynn suggest opting for a classic colour scheme that is unlikely to look dated over time - such as white, brown, black or grey - accented with splashes of bold colour.

"Small doses [pack] a tonne of colour into the space. But if the homeowner's taste were to change, it's simple to bring in a new colour," Mr Flynn explains.

A classic colour scheme is likely to be most suitable for traditional kitchens - to complete the look, such kitchens may benefit from quirky touches such as a chandelier, designer Nina Campbell told the Telegraph earlier this year.
